The Body Shop has joineda campaign involving two of Britain's leading animal protection groups tohelp customers expose the truth about cosmetic companies' policies on animaltesting of their products and ingredients.

The Find Out The Facts campaign isan international initiative designed to pin down those companies that refuseto give straight answers to straight forward questions: Do they refuse totest or commission tests on their cosmetics products or ingredients? Dothey take action against suppliers who animal test ingredients that theysell to them? Do they support the campaign for the proposed 1998 EuropeanUnion ban on cosmetics testing on animals?

From the end of July, The Body Shop is distributing wallet cards to itscustomers asking key questions identified by the British Union for the Abolitionof Vivisection (BUAV) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).Customers will be encouraged to send letters asking these questions to theworld's top 40 cosmetics manufacturers and other cosmetic retailers or touse the wallet car to quiz representatives of those companies inside theirstores.

BUAV Director Mike Baker said today; "Consumers are confused andeasily misled by the range of 'no animal testing' claims on products. Animaltesting of products and ingredients - new and existing - is STILL goingon. Any company that states it is against animal testing in the cosmeticsindustry should be refusing to carry out or commission tests on their productsor ingredients. This is just the first step however, we also urge them tomonitor their suppliers, support the development of alternative tests andmost importantly, back the imposition of the 1998 European Union ban oncosmetics testing on animals. "

Anita Roddick, CEO of The Body Shop International states; "The BodyShop is quite clear that we have never tested our products or ingredientson animals and that we will take action against any ingredient supplierthat carries out such tests. Our customers expect that of us and demandit of the rest of the industry. Our answer to the 'against animal testing?'questions posed by the animal groups is Yes!"

 AgainstAnimal Testing? Act now...

In 1993 the European Union voted to ban all animal testing of cosmeticsingredients and producs. The ban is due to come into effect throughout Europefrom 1 January 1998. However a get out clause says that this will only happenif alternative, non-animal tests are approved by the international regulators. This means that animal testing could continue after 1998.

This year Europe has to decide. Impose the ban or delay it?
