Since 1993, Kultaturve Oy, from Finland, has brought a new ecological dimension to the textile industry. The raw material used is cotton grass fibre (Enophorum Vaginatum), which can be further developed by mixing it with wool, cotton and other woven fabrics.

Cotton grass fibre is a waste product of the peat industry, and it has hardly been utilised as yet. Having spent hundreds or thousands
of years in the depth of the swamps, the properties of the cotton grass have allowed it to be transformed into a raw material suitable for textile production, and therefore a mere mechanical processing of the fibre, without the use of chemicals, is sufficient. Emphasis is also placed on selecting the appropriate woven fibre.

This cotton grass fibre has several uniqueproperties. It is:
anti-static
hypoallergenic
very clean: cotton grass originates from the clean, strong, pollution free environment that existed hundreds of years ago. In the acidic environment it has remained free from bacteria.
warm (significantly warmer than wool)
absorbing (dampness, secretions and odours)
light-weight
Peat textiles come in earth colours. Different shades can be created by combining light to dark brown cotton grass with woven fabrics of different colours, e.g. white, grey or black wool. The fibres of
cotton grass, as well as parts of its root, create a beautiful jaspé effect.
Kultaturve Oy's main products are yarn, fabrics, fleece, felt and
wadding. Goods such as blankets, knitwear, shoes, insoles, hats, waistcoats, coats etc. are manufactured from these. The new cotton grass clothing range, with brand new materials, has been designed by Kaisa Raiski.
