THE NEED FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Since 1950 the worldpopulation has doubled. In the year2030, more than 10 billion people will inhabit the earth.

We cannot enjoy the same consumption patterns without puttingto risk the future of our children and life in general. The ecosystems arereaching their limits and can no longer support vital economic activities.Ecotopia therefore promotes a sustainable, harmonious lifestyle, with asustainable economic system as its engine.

THE NEED FOR AUTONOMY

Material autonomy implies that one has the means to fullyexpress himself. This can involve an intelligent use of technology: theinstruments of mankind. Ecotopia promotes the use of soft technologies forcreative, interactive and "deep-ecological" applications. Spiritualautonomy implies the openness to learn. This means an independence fromconditioning, addictions and social control. Ecotopia serves as a learningenvironment and meeting place to exchange experiences.

THE NEED FOR COHERENCE

Man gets to know himself through his relationship withthe world. That's why it is important for him to function within a sociallyjust and environmentally healthy context. For example, indigenous peoplewho still feel very connected to the earth take better care of their naturalsurroundings, as they see their direct interdependency.

Ecotopia develops innovative formula's, which translatethis context in an economic way, both in terms of efficiency and profitability.At the same time Ecotopia pays attention to what can not be expressed inmoney and offers different elements that can contribute to the art of life.

STRUCTURE OF ECOTOPIA

Ecotopia is the first virtual corporation in Belgium.

A virtual corporation is a flexible network of autonomouspartners that work together on a project basis. The participants of theEcotopia-network all strive to contribute to a sustainable, harmonious societywith innovative and future-oriented projects.

Ecotopia vc was founded at the end of 1993. In April 1994,Ecotopia opened its doors for the public.

ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS OF ECOTOPIA

Everyone can participate in the activities of Ecotopiavc. These include art-presentations, musical performances, talks, introductions,seminars etc. Everyone can send in his or her candidacy to join a workgroup(forum). These provide an excellent opportunity to meet persons who sharethe same interests.

Both socio-cultural activities and the forums are announcedin the Ecotopia Newsletter. It is sent monthly to all Ecotopia-members.Groups are able to visit Ecotopia's educational center in Westmalle, Belgium.
